There are several varieties of trolls, and they vary greatly in appearance. The different types range from lithe and graceful figures to rough and bulky hulks, with at least a generally humanoid physique. The ‘skin’ tone of a troll takes on the hue of whichever natural rock, stone, or gemstone that they have taken form from.
Due to their innate strength, trolls are sometimes perceived as a threat; however, they can actually be very friendly, hospitable individuals. Depending on their surroundings, Trolls can be either highly communal, or very reclusive. In either case, they typically demonstrate great care for their environment and those who are around them. Whilst some perceive them as unsophisticated, even unintelligent, trolls are actually capable of great wisdom and great age, and are some of the most naturally attuned creatures. They are not particularly territorial in nature, unless they consider something to be a threat. However, they can be highly protective of that which they care for, and as such it is considered unwise to anger a troll.
Creation[]
Trolls are formed by a natural influx of magic permeating into rock, stone or gemstone which alters its properties and gives it life. This newly altered material gradually expands and develops into a humanoid form, which is then freely animated and self-conscious. As such, trolls have no direct lineage, besides association with their home. Whilst it is unknown as to what causes the flows of magic which is responsible for this process, it is notable that there are hubs of this form of magical activity amongst many of the ancient troll communities, which is the root of their existence.
Due to this process of creation, it is impossible for trolls to ‘naturally’ reproduce, as it is a process that they have no direct control over. However, it is also due to this that trolls have strong communities, where they all work to raise the young together, and have little concept of ‘personal possessions’, typically being more than happy to share what they have with any that they feel are deserving - though they also do not take things for themselves without consideration. Even trolls that live in isolation usually demonstrate these traits. However, as with all forms of life, there are always the few exceptions.
There are various legends regarding the origins of the trolls. Some stories of their conception into the universe name them as mortal children of the Elemental powers themselves. Another is that Cosmia spun the flows of magic into an essence capable of life, which she then poured into the mould of the earth, molding rock, stone or gemstone to form a vessel suitable to contain the magic and melding them into a conscious lifeform. Others name them as the precursors to the Dwarves; Mordons first, experimental attempts at creating life, carving them from stone and imbuing them with different elemental forces in an attempt to recreate the beautiful creatures already inhabiting the world. The latter is usually told by Dwarves themselves, and some stories mix all three origins together. No matter which tale of origin a Troll considers to be true, they usually share the opinion that they were born from the land to speak for it.
Death[]
Upon death, the magical essence within a troll dissipates, burning its way out of the material which had formed its body. As such, any qualities of their form are ruined, as fractures appear across them, ultimately resulting in their body shattering and becoming like sand.
Appearance[]
Trolls can be quite large and bulky, however smaller and more lithe forms are not uncommon. They are notable for possessing inhuman shades of skin, representing where they originated from; this should represent a form of natural rock, stone, or gemstone.
